With broad expanses of
the Pacific Ocean nearby, San Diego offers some excellent snorkeling
opportunities. La Jolla Coves and the La Jolla ecological preserve are
some of the most popular spots for San Diego snorkeling. Both of these
spots feature shallow coral reefs and underwater kelp forests that are
perfect for exploring. Additionally, a number of interesting marine
animals make their homes in the waters near San Diego, such as the
leopard shark, which although a frightening 5 feel long, only has a
harmless 2 inch mouth. This is also one of the few places to see an
endangered fish called the giant black sea bass. The best experience in
the La Jolla Coves is had on tours, where experienced guides lead
snorkelers through the sea caves. Sea lions and harbor seals are also
common in this area and can be the highlight of any snorkeling in San
Diego trip. There are a number of trip operators that offer half-day
excursions for between $50-70 including a meal and drink in addition to
all necessary gear.
