Off of the Hawaiian
Island of Maui, located in the Ma‘alaea Bay, is a volcanic crater called
Molokini. It is one of the most popular underwater destinations in the
world for both scuba divers and snorkelers because of the clarity of the
water and the profusion of sea life. The extinct volcanic caldera rises
up out of the water and forms a protective crescent that blocks waves
and strong currents. The center of the crater houses an elaborate and
lush coral reef. Through these clear waters, those snorkeling in
Molokini can view some of the 250 species of fish that make their home
there. Molokini snorkeling is best early in the day and there are a
number of trip options available. Because of its status as one of the
best spots for snorkeling, Molokini trip options are available in both
half day and full day versions. Many trip operators also offer scuba
diving as an option. Many Molokini snorkeling trip operators also offer
a stop at “Turtle Town,” a nearby spot known for having a number of
Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles that snorkelers can watch up close.
