One of the largest
islands in the Florida Keys is Key Largo. It is the self-proclaimed
“Diving Capitol of the World” and that reputation certainly extends to
Key Largo snorkeling. The blue waters of the Florida Keys have become a
major focus for the protection of underwater resources and that movement
found its beginning in Key Largo. The conservation efforts become
obvious to those snorkeling in Key Largo because the reefs do not show
the same signs of damage.
Key Largo snorkeling holds claim to the first
underwater state park, the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. All
fishing is prohibited, and the ocean life here are noted for being
particularly comfortable with scuba divers and snorkelers.
Snorkeling tours are available at John Pennekamp park starting at about
$29 for 2.5 hours. An
underwater site known as “The Elbow” is one of the best for snorkeling
in Key Largo. Underwater photography is excellent here, and among the
diverse marine animals to be viewed are friendly moray eels. A spot for
snorkeling in Key Largo that is particularly famous is at the Key Largo
Dry Rocks. Here snorkelers can view the “Christ of the Deep” statue, a
bronze statue sunk about 25 feet into the water.
