The Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge (in Citrus County, FL) is
sprawling nature preserve designed to protect the West Indian Manatee.
The islands of the Refuge are surrounded by the crystal clear waters of
Kings Bay, where you’ll find great snorkeling opportunities. Most
visitors come to get close to the manatees, and these gentle giants are
a sight to behold. The Refuge is open to the public all year round, but
the best time to see the manatees is from December to March, when the
manatees congregate around the warm spring waters that spill up into the
cold sea water. You can only get to the Refuge by boat, but there are
plenty of dive shops and tour operators that work out of Crystal River. |
