In the Caribbean Sea,
off the curving arm of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, is the island of
Cozumel. It has long been a popular destination for scuba divers, but
it is not necessary to be a trained diver to appreciate the beauty and
color found underwater in Cozumel. Snorkeling in Cozumel is a
delightful experience for visitors of all ages. One truth to underwater
exploration is that the brightest colors are always found nearest to the
surface where the suns light is brightest. That means that shallow
reefs are often the most colorful. There is excellent Cozumel
snorkeling right off the coast, especially off of the rugged “iron
coasts.” It is possible to rent equipment from hotels, or organize a
trip with a charter. An excellent snorkeling spot can be found at
Chankanaab that is an eco-park. An admission fee is required, but there
is so much to see that you can expect to spend the entire day there. A
snorkeling spot that is just off the roadside is called Dzul Ha. Though
it isn’t as large, Dzul Ha offers rich marine life and color and is a
perfect short afternoon trip.
