Costa Rica means “rich
coast” in Spanish and with the Pacific Ocean to the west and the
Caribbean Sea to the east, there is no lack of coastline in this small
country. Variable conditions can make snorkeling in Costa Rica a tricky
proposition despite the abundance of accessible waterfront. One of
the best
bets for Costa Rica snorkeling can be found in the reefs off of the Manzanillo
beaches. This area contains a number of cove beaches that can only be
reached by boat. Several companies offer a number of 2-4 hour outings
for around US$25 without lunch. It is possible to snorkel from the
beach or from the charter boat, depending on your preference. Unlike
much of the snorkeling in Costa Rica, the visibility on the reefs off of
Manzanillo is usually good. The coral life in these reefs is well
formed thanks to the protection of the bay. Elk horn coral, fire
coral, brain coral and sea fans provide a colorful home to blue tangs,
snappers, jack fish, spiny lobsters and a myriad of other sea life. A
rare treat that makes this Costa Rica snorkeling adventure really stand
out is the chance to see the giant sleeping parrotfish in a night dive
off of Playa Perla.
