Saving Coral Reefs

September 9th, 2011

If you enjoy snorkeling, you know how important it is to help preserve coral reefs.

Among the basic rules of snorkeling safety is being aware of your surroundings – and that includes respecting the reef.

We like to hear about the good work people like Reef Check are doing – like this project in Haiti.

Off the Beaten Track

August 30th, 2011

Looking for a snorkeling destination your water-loving friends have never experienced? If you find yourself in Taiwan, you should check out Green Island for a unique snorkeling experience.

It’s way off the beaten track, but it’s worth the effort to escape the high-density, urban experience of Taipei for the lush, exotic waters of Green Island.

Snorkeling Back in Time

August 17th, 2011

We’re always looking for a new, exciting snorkeling experience.

This sounds like just what we’re after: an underwater archeological park in the Bay of Naples.

Roman ruins and snorkeling – what a great combination.  We can’t wait to try it!

Left Behind

June 30th, 2011

Remember that movie Open Water? The one about scuba divers left behind by a careless dive operator? The one where, you know, they get eaten by sharks?

Well, this snorkeling tourist was left behind on an Australian snorkeling outing, but he met with a happier ending.

Where to Snorkel

May 25th, 2011

If you need an excuse to go snorkeling in new places more often, you can blame it on divecaching – an underwater update to the geocaching fad of a few years ago.

Read all about it!

Thing to do in Denver when you snorkel

May 20th, 2011

Denver may not be the best place for snorkeling – it hasn’t made our Snorkeling Destinations page (yet) – but we were intrigued to learn that you can snorkel at the Downtown Aquarium in Denver.

You can get up close and swim with a 400 lb. Queensland Grouper, Moray Eels and Nurse Sharks and many other undersea creatures.

Next time we’re in Denver, we’re going to the Downtown Aquarium!

Cool New Underwater Camera

May 13th, 2011

We’ve been shopping for an underwater video camera, and this is one of the handful of models that’s caught our eye: the Samsung W200.

It’s slim and compact and is waterproof up to 3 meters deep.

We may have to add this one to our ever-growing collection of snorkeling gear.

National Parks

April 25th, 2011

There are some great snorkeling locations at our National Parks. Biscayne National Park, in Homestead, FL, just north of the Keys, is among our favorites.

Giant sponges, hard and soft corals and lots of colorful fish are some of the attractions at Biscayne National Park. What is your favorite National Park?

Lionfish Invasion

April 20th, 2011

A couple of years ago, we posted about Lionfish invading the Florida Keys.

We were reminded of that as we read this post about Lionfish in Belize.

Lovely though these fish may be, it seems they are quite the peril…

Have you seen any Lionfish recently? When and where?

Reef Building

April 14th, 2011

An artificial reef designed for snorkeling is under construction in the waters off of Pensacola Beach. Several reef modules are being installed about 450 feet into the Gulf, just east of the Portofino Resort. Construction should be finished in a few days, weather permitting. This site will be a nice addition to the snorkeling scene in this part of Florida.
